Nurse of the Year 2008
Karen Logan, Nurse Consultant and Head of Continence Services, Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust, South East Wales
Patients with bladder conditions, who may have to learn to catheterise themselves as part of their treatment, often find the experience daunting, profoundly embarrassing and even traumatic. Karen's pioneering research takes the patients' perspective as its starting point to radically enhance the service. A new policy has been launched to better inform and equip nurses who teach intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC), enabling patients to be treated with increased dignity and sensitivity, fundamentally improving their quality of life.
